Carp culture is the main stream of freshwater aquaculture, which has Involved itself from the domestic activities of the countrymen. Apart from the traditional practice making it easier for farmer to undertake fish culture. Carp/prawn culture system offers a wide variety of possibilities in terms of operational area, type of water bodies, scale of investment etc. Providing great degree of feasibility for harnessing the production potential of water bodies. Prawn (Galda), Carp and Monosex Tilaipia culture technology which has already developed in the country have virtually revolutionized in aquaculture. In case of poly-culture a limited number of Catla/Silver carp/ Bighead carp may be introduced for the biological control of excessive plankton.
Along with the progress of science & technology the living standard of mankind has become progressed at all times specially in the food items. No-a-days peoples do not only want to eat enough food but also need the food be cooked, nutritionally enriched, delicious and flavors. The quality fish, prawn and shrimps are especially exported from the largest suppliers of South-east Asia , India , and Bangladesh.
Thailand , Malaysia , Vietnam , Australia and Philippines . Europe , USA and Japan are the largest buyer of fish, prawn and shrimp products of the world. But the production from natural source is quite unable to supply the demand due to various reasons. The declining trend of world fish catch has leaded the aqua culturists in new challenges of more production of fish, shrimps and prawn. Every country of the world has well recognized the potentiality of aquaculture. Recently shrimp and prawn breeding has brought great profit to farmers. However, the farmers still have to take risk in this field. The reason is not because the unsuitable treatment in the crisis time.
Prawn and shrimp culture took its root as an export oriented industry in Bangladesh . As a foreign exchange earner commodity frozen food (shrimp, prawn and fish) stand next to Garments industry with an annual earning of Tk 4,000 core in the last financial year. However, as a foreign exchange earner this sector is the highest in the priority. Bangladesh is most suitable for Prawn (Galda) farming Giant Freshwater Prawn ( Macrobrachium rosenbergii ) is the most valuable and commercial species in our country and there is a tremendous potentiality of farming the prawn throughout the country. Specially the southern part of Bangladesh . There is no such fear of disease problem in Prawn (Macrobrachum rosenbergii) farming as found in the Shrimp (Peneaus monodon) farming Moreover the water, weather and soil is favorable for Prawn Farming in all respect.
In this background it is a matter of great hope that the financing authority has nothing to hesitate to provide loans to the farmers, those who mainly culture freshwater fish and prawn in their inland water areas.
Aquaculture is going to take distant shape within agricultural commodities through a process of trial and errors. There is shortage of recorded data, inputs, outputs and managements techniques. It is widely believed that improved method of culture could significantly production to double or triple of its shape through application of known aquaculture technologies.
For the opportunities of modern technology it has gained popularity and treated as profitable activities. So, it is matter of great hope that financial institutions can provide loans to such entrepreneurs without hesitation those who are engrained in fish/prawn production related activities. It is evident that through aquaculture practice income could be increased 5/6 times than agriculture and thereby offers excellent opportunities for employment generation.
The government and the people of the country looked upon the employment, create multitudes of auxiliary industries, increase, earning of foreign exchange as a major source and thereby increased GDP and GNP in near future.
Lack of quality feed and seed are one of the main constraints to develop aquaculture in Bangladesh . For fish/prawn culture quality and healthy seed is needed. It is not very easy to succeed in aquaculture unless quality of seed and feed could not be produced in his own premises. Fish/prawn seed can be obtained from two source-one from natural and another from artificial breeding. The natural source of fish seed has declined due to damage of spawning ground for various causes. In addition to that desired species are not always available from natural sources.
Now a days it is possible to produce quality and demandable species
introducing modern technology through induced breeding. For the opportunities of modern technology fish and Prawn Hatchery has gained popularity and treated as a profitable activity.
Government Support:
The Government acknowledges the need to increase the production of fishery resources in Bangladesh and aims to provide the necessary support for the development of the sector. The national budget for 2008-2009 has given priority to these sectors as a means to eradiate poverty and the Government has waived all duty on import of raw materials for feed and reduced the duty on vitamins and minerals used in feed preparation. Moreover, the government also declared tax holidays for 10 years for such support industries.
Classification of prawn culture system:
Prawn and shrimp cultures are classified mainly as extensive, semi-intensive and intensive. The classification is based mainly on pond facilities, stocking density, food supply, water management, yield, technical know-how, skill and other major inputs. In the recent years the semi-intensive and intensive farming has gained some progress, although extensive system still remains in major practice. In order to apply semi-intensive culture system comparatively smaller pond size and higher investments are required and there prevails high risk and proper technical know how and close supervision. On the other hand increasing acquisition and development cost per unit area has led farmers with land holding to go intensive operation.
Considering all factors to comply the Government policy the entrepreneurs have decided to establish an integrated Aquaculture farm as Annesha Agro-Fisheries Ltd.
The feasibility analysis of this project proposal has been prepared covering in details such as, estimated cost, technical, market, management and it is also socio-economically acceptable, which will provide direct and indirect benefit to neighboring farmers as well as people of Bangladesh .
Experience of Annesha Agro-Fisheries Ltd.
Annesha Agro-Fisheries Ltd. is a company limited by shares, working in Barisal districts with multi-dimensional program as an effective development partner of Bangladesh . It has been reported that there is ample opportunity to develop Prawn farming activities in the southern part especially in the Barisal region of Bangladesh . The area is very potential for Galda farming as reported by the Department of Fisheries, Govt. of Bangladesh. But proper steps have not yet been taken up neither by the DOF nor by any NGO to utilize the fisheries resource of that area. Realizing the potentiality of culture in the Barisal region program of Pilot Galda farming have been taken up by AF in their own premise as well as in the command area situated in Uzirpur upazila under Barisal District. AF has a plan to develop integrated Agro based farming complex in their own premise where the main component will be Prawn (Galda) faming along with Horticulture, Poultry, Dairy and Duckary etc. If the Project found to be a viable and profitable one the idea will be disseminated to the Neighboring areas to improve the livelihood status of the people.
